The Grass Changthangi Goats Need Is Vanishing

For thousands of years, specific high-altitude grasses—Stipa, Carex, Kobresia species—provided the precise nutrition that enabled Changthangi goats to produce 12-16 micron fiber. These grasses grow only above 14,000 feet in conditions of extreme cold.

Now, permafrost melt destroys root systems. Warmer temperatures allow lower-quality scrub vegetation to invade. The nutritious grasses are being pushed to higher elevations—but there's a limit to how high goats can graze before oxygen becomes too thin.

Malnourished Goats Cannot Produce Fine Fiber

Herders describe goats that once had thick, lustrous coats now producing thin, patchy undercoat. When goats don't get adequate nutrition from degraded pastures, their bodies prioritize survival over growing the ultra-fine 12-micron fiber that takes enormous biological energy to produce.

Fiber diameter increases under stress—goats on poor pasture may produce 16-18 micron fiber instead of the prized 12-14 micron range. This is no longer true Changthang Pashmina. It's just ordinary cashmere.

From 500 Goats to 150: Economic Collapse

Tashi Namgyal's grandfather grazed 500 goats on pastures near Korzok. His father maintained 350. Tashi could support only 180 goats on the same land before selling his herd in 2019. The grass simply couldn't feed more animals—it had become too sparse, too low in protein.

When herders can't maintain herd sizes of 200+ goats, they can't earn enough to survive. The economic threshold forces migration. With less than 150 goats, a family produces perhaps 25-30 kg of fiber annually—worth ₹1.5 lakh at cooperative prices, but insufficient for year-round survival.

Losing the Knowledge of Which Grass Grows Where

For 3,000 years, Changpa herders knew exactly which pastures to use in which season, how long to stay before grass recovery required moving, which slopes held snow longer to keep grass moist, which valleys dried first in spring for early grazing.

This knowledge dies with each family that migrates to Leh. Younger herders no longer learn the names of grasses, the migration routes, the seasonal calendar their grandfathers navigated by instinct. When the knowledge is gone, even if climate stabilizes, the sophisticated pastoral system cannot be rebuilt.

Voices from the Displaced: Watching the Grass Die

"My grandfather could read the grass. He knew which slopes would be green first in spring, where to find Stipa grass after the monsoon, which valleys held moisture longest. I watched those same pastures turn brown. The grass my goats needed—it just stopped growing. Where there was green, now there is dust and stones."

Fourth-generation herder who migrated to Leh in 2019 after watching his herd decline from 350 goats to 180 over ten years. "The goats were always hungry. Their coats became thin. The fiber we sold was no longer the fine pashm buyers wanted. We knew we couldn't continue."

"In my mother's time, the grass grew thick to your knees in summer pastures. Now I see patches—grass here, bare ground there. My goats walk further every day to find enough to eat. They come back tired. Tired goats don't grow good fiber. This is what people don't understand when they ask why Pashmina is getting scarce."

Moved to Nyoma township in 2021 after her family's 200 goats could no longer find adequate grazing. "We tried moving to higher pastures, but the grass hadn't arrived there yet—or maybe it never would. The climate is changing faster than the plants can move upward."

"The permafrost is melting beneath the grass. The roots that held the soil for thousands of years are dying. I've seen whole hillsides where the ground just collapses, leaving scars where nothing grows. This isn't slow change—this is the land dying in front of our eyes. And when the land dies, we die too."

Former cooperative leader whose extended family of 18 left in 2020. "Government officials visited and measured the fiber from our goats—it was 17 microns, sometimes 18. They said it wasn't real Pashmina anymore. But this is what happens when goats eat poor grass. The fiber follows the food."

Without the Grass, There Is No Pashmina

The 12-16 micron fiber that makes Changthang Pashmina the world's finest exists because of a precise biological equation: Changthangi goats + extreme cold + specific high-altitude grasses = ultra-fine fiber. Remove any element, and the equation collapses.

Climate change is removing the grass. When that happens, even if the goats remain, even if the herders stay, the fiber will no longer be 12 microns. It will be 16, then 18, then ordinary cashmere indistinguishable from Mongolian or Chinese sources. The biological uniqueness will be gone forever.

What's Needed: Grassland restoration projects, climate adaptation support for nomadic communities, documentation of traditional grazing knowledge before it vanishes, and international recognition that preserving Changthang pastures isn't just environmental conservation—it's safeguarding 3,000 years of irreplaceable cultural heritage.

Three Thousand Years of Nomadic Wisdom

Their seasonal migration patterns weren't random wandering. They moved herds every 40-50 days to allow grass recovery. They knew which pastures could sustain heavy grazing, which needed longer rest periods, how to read snow patterns to predict where fresh grass would emerge first in spring. This rotational grazing system preserved the fragile high-altitude ecosystem for millennia.

The Changpa didn't just harvest fiber from their goats—they maintained the grasslands that made exceptional fiber possible. When they leave, when this 3,000-year-old knowledge vanishes, the grasslands lose their stewards. No government conservation program, no environmental NGO has the depth of understanding that comes from 120 generations of living in balance with this harsh environment.
